Red Irish Lord

Red Irish Lord, Hemilepidotus hemilepidotus

This is one of the more iconic bottom fish seen in the waters of British Columbia and beyond.  Rarely seen swimming, it is likely to been noticed perched among sponges, shells, or anemone, with colour that often matches its surroundings.  Red Irish Lord have the ability to change their colouring, including chromatophores in its eyes, to better enable it to go undetected as it lays in wait for its prey. It is an ambush predator, relying on surprise, to catch its unsuspecting prey of small crustaceans and fish.
